Junior Professional Officer (JPO)
Die Bundesregierung hat mit mehr als 40 Internationalen Organisationen Abkommen zur Förderung von deutschen Nachwuchskräften als JPO geschlossen. Die Federführung des Programms liegt beim Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ); das Büro Führungskräfte zu Internationalen Organisationen (BFIO) ist verantwortlich für die Durchführung des Programms. Angesprochen sind Bewerber*innen mit deutscher Staatsangehörigkeit und mit erster Berufserfahrung nach abgeschlossenem Hochschulstudium.
Da es sich um ein Nachwuchsförderprogramm handelt, sollten Bewerberinnen und Bewerber im Regelfall zwischen zwei bis vier Jahren Berufserfahrung haben.

Junior Professional Officer (JPO) in Political Affairs, New York
Sector/Unit: Political Affairs
Duration: 2 years with the possibility of extension for another year.
Please note that for participants of the JPO-Programme two years of work experience are mandatory!
Main duties and responsibilities (Examples):
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues, in general, and in particular as they relate to the countries and thematic mandates assigned.
- Keep abreast of latest trends and developments in the Security Council and its subsidiary bodies and provide inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in missions and elsewhere in the Secretariat.
- Assist in the provision of substantive support to the Security Council and its subsidiary bodies, including sanctions committees and working groups which, inter alia, deal with conflict and post conflict situations, threats caused by international terrorism and proliferation of unconventional weapons.
- Draft notes, activity reports, background papers, talking points, speeches and other correspondence on sensitive and high profile matters of concern to the Security Council for senior UN officials.
- Monitor actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN entities, government and nongovernmental organizations.
- Maintain contact with other sectors of the UN, international organizations and Member States on coordination and policy matters.
- Participate in the provision of secretariat services to the Security Council, its subsidiary bodies, conferences, meetings, and /or special missions.
- Contribute to cross-cutting issues within the Branch.
Profile of qualification:
Education:
- Master’s degree in in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related area.
Experience:
- A minimum of two years of relevant work experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area.
- Experience with data and political analysis is highly desirable.
- Experience researching, drafting, and editing complex documents for publication is highly desirable.
- Experience in working with and/or knowledge of the United Nations, its agencies or relevant international organizations is desirable.
- Experience with information systems and databases is an asset.
Key Competencies:
- Fluency in English.
- Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
- Good knowledge of the mandates and activities of the United Nations Security Council is an asset.
- Data management and visualization skills (Power BI, Tableau, or similar software) are highly desirable.
