Junior Professional Officer (JPO)
Die Bundesregierung hat mit mehr als 40 Internationalen Organisationen Abkommen zur Förderung von deutschen Nachwuchskräften als JPO geschlossen. Die Federführung des Programms liegt beim Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ); das Büro Führungskräfte zu Internationalen Organisationen (BFIO) ist verantwortlich für die Durchführung des Programms. Angesprochen sind Bewerber*innen mit deutscher Staatsangehörigkeit und mit erster Berufserfahrung nach abgeschlossenem Hochschulstudium.

Da es sich um ein Nachwuchsförderprogramm handelt, sollten Bewerberinnen und Bewerber im Regelfall zwischen zwei bis vier Jahren Berufserfahrung haben.

Junior Professional Officer (JPO) in Environmental Affairs, Geneva
Sector/Unit: Environmental Affairs
Duration: 2 years with the possibility of extension for another year. 
Please note that for participants of the JPO-Programme two years of work experience are mandatory!


Main duties and responsibilities (Examples):

  • Assist in assessing the most urgent environmental needs in Ukraine based upon the methodology of the ECE EPR Programme and on the results of ongoing and planned impacts assessments, and in making recommendations to advance a sustainable recovery of the country;
  • Assist in planning and monitoring the implementation of EPRs in countries of the Caucasus, Central Asia and Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and interested countries in other regions, carry out research, undertake field missions and draft chapters on themes covered by EPRs. 
  • Support the Environmental Monitoring and Assessment (EMA) Programme, including the implementation of relevant project activities. 
  • Contribute to the analysis of environmental policy and management; evaluate frameworks of strategic management practices; carry out desk studies; carry out interviews in the reviewed country; crosscheck information and prepare recommendations; and participate in integrating or assembling the chapters of the report, and in verifying and harmonizing information and recommendations;
  • Prepare or contribute to the preparation of publications and other written reports, documents and communications and provide substantive input for updating website content and managing social media.
  • Assist in planning, organizing and servicing of meetings under the EPR and EMA programmes and provide support to intergovernmental processes dealing with environmental policy and management.
  • Represent the work section at international and other meetings; and prepare inputs to statements by secretariat staff to such meetings.


Profile of qualification:

Education:

  • Master’s degree in environmental science, environmental economics, environmental management, environmental law, or another relevant discipline.

Experience:

  • A minimum of two years of relevant work experience in Governmental service, research institutions or in international intergovernmental or non-governmental organizations, or the private sector on environment-related issues and/or sustainable development.

Key Competencies:

  • Fluency in English.
  • Knowledge of Russian and/or another official language of the United Nations is an advantage. 
  • Experience in using office, data analysis and geographical information system software tools.
